Aroid family. Homeland South America. There are about 80 species in nature. A rare plant that loves greenhouse conditions (moisture and heat) and therefore is not widely used among flower growers. Alocasia is a beautiful houseplant, with large arrow-oval (or heart-shaped) leaves, of which there are no more than 6-7. The most common types:

  • Alocasia amazon Alocasia amazonica - stem up to 15 cm high, petioles 40-60 cm pinkish-green with transverse strokes, with dark leaves and bright white veins on them, leaf length about 40-50 cm
  • Alocasia klobuchkovaya Alocasia cucullata - thick stem - 3-6 cm in diameter, petioles 30-40 cm, heart-shaped leaves, shiny bright or dark green, 25-40 cm long.
  • Alocasia copper-red Alocasia cuprea is not a large, but very beautiful plant with a stem about 10 cm long, petioles 20-30 cm, heart-shaped leaves up to 25-35 cm long, copper-green above with a metallic sheen, intensively below - magenta.
  • Alocasia large-rooted Alocasia macrorbiza is a large plant (in nature, only the stem is up to 2 m, and the leaves reach 50-90 cm long) with variegated leaves, heart-shaped, with large white spots.

In addition, interspecific hybrids can be found commercially, such as the highly decorative Alocasia hybrid 'Black Velvet' Alocasia hybryd 'Black Velvet'.

Alocasia care

Temperature: Alocasia is thermophilic. In summer, the temperature is normal, in winter it is cool, optimally 18-20 ° C, not lower than 15 ° C.

Lighting: Bright diffused light. In summer, you need shading from direct sunlight during the hot hours of the day, but preferably morning or evening sun. Alokazii copper-red, Amazonian and large-rooted, in winter need additional lighting.

Watering: Abundant in summer, the land should not dry out too much, but do not allow waterlogging. In winter, watering alocasia moderate, the earth should dry out in the upper half of the pot. Alokaziya does not like overdrying and excessive watering.

Fertilization: In spring and summer, alocasia are fed every 2-3 weeks. A complex mineral fertilizer is used for indoor plants.

Air humidity: Frequent spraying and careful washing of leaves. As a preventive measure for spider mites, you can arrange a warm shower once a week or two.

Transfer: The soil for alocasia must be nutritious. Transplanted annually in the spring. You can not use heavy clay soil - it is too heavy, dense. The following soil mixture is suitable: 1 part of leafy soil, 1 part of coniferous, 1 part of humus and 0.5 part of sand. For copper-red and Amazonian alocasia, pine bark is added to the soil.

Reproduction: By division during transplantation, as well as by offspring, eyes, cut with pulp from the grassy trunk.
