So tolumnia blooms. The flowers are small, about 1.5 cm in diameter, but very colorful.

Orchid family. These amazing miniature orchids have long been attributed (some still refer) to oncidiums, due to the shape of the flowers that are very similar to pupae with skirts. At some point, these orchids were singled out into their own genus - tolumnia because of the smaller number of flowers, shorter peduncle and other differences from other oncidiums.

Tolumnia comes from the Caribbean. In nature, tolumnias live in lowland and mountain forests. At home, they require warm conditions and high humidity. Thanks to more than 25 years of hybridization, a wide range of colors has been achieved, ranging from bright yellow to dark brown, from purple to orange.

Their leaves are not flat, like all oncidiums, but triangular. This leaf shape helped the plants adapt to the short dry periods in their habitats. Tolumnias do not have bulbs, so the leaves serve as a reserve resource for them, just like in phalaenopsis.

Tolumnea care

Watering: This is the most important part in the care of thorns. Watering these orchids should be done when the plant needs it. Since the leaves are thick and store nutrient reserves, the condition of the leaves can be used to determine whether you are watering the plant or not. If the leaves are lethargic and deflated, then the interval between waterings should be reduced, otherwise, when the plant runs out of nutrient reserves, it will dry out. The root system must dry out completely between waterings! Tolumnia, like all orchids, it is better not to water or spray overnight to avoid hypothermia and decay. Water for irrigation should contain a minimum of salts. Since the roots are prone to decay, they are usually planted in a quickly drying substrate, therefore, they will have to be watered often. But the main indicator of the toluminous state is the leaves. If they are thick and dense, then the plant is normal, and if brownish and wrinkled, then it's time to save.

Lighting: These small orchids can also be grown under artificial lighting, the main thing is to choose the right spectrum. They also grow very well on the windowsill. They are very fond of bright diffused light and the direct morning sun, but they should be shaded from the daytime sun. If the leaves begin to turn red, then this is the first sign of an incipient burn, the plant should be removed in the shade.

Fertilizers: During watering, while the roots are wet, sprinkle with a fertilizer solution. Fertilizers need to be added 2 times less than recommended for other orchids. Never fertilize a non-watered plant. Fertilize twice a month.

Flowering: Peduncles are formed on old or new rosettes. Flowering occurs 2-3 times a year. After flowering, do not remove the peduncle; flowering may continue over time. If the peduncle is brown and dry, then it is dead and can be removed.

The coconut is cut into halves. The holes drilled into the coconuts will be used for the eyelets on which these blocks will hang.

We take the plant itself. See that the roots are healthy, without rot.

A substrate that allows air to pass through well and does not allow the roots to dry out immediately - palm fiber, which can be removed from sticks for attaching monsters or climbing plants.

We wrap the half of the coconut with coconut fiber and fix it with a fishing line, which we tie.

The main thing is not to open the window when it's cold.

Transfer: The main factor is the porosity of the substrate, which would allow air to pass through and allow it to circulate. Tolumnias can be planted in bark, large pieces of 2-3 cm, or planted on a block.

I planted my tolumnias on coconut halves, which, in my opinion, is the easiest way to plant, since coconuts are cheap and can be bought in any supermarket.

By the way, you don't need to put anything inside the coconut half, the tolumnia should be tied to the convex side of the coconut half. If you add sphagnum moss to the fiber, you can water it once every 4 days, but I spray it every day. The fiber dries very quickly, but the roots of toluminous ones are prone to rotting in a wet substrate, if you don't wake up the moss, you will have to drown the coconuts every other day and spray every day.
