Aroid family. Homeland - the island of Madagascar.

At home, Zamioculcas zamioculcas zamiifolia is widespread - an evergreen tuberous plant with dark green fleshy leaves, pointed at the end. The surface of the sheet is glossy. The stems are thick, the leaves sit on them symmetrically, alternately. The plant is large, grows in an apartment to a height of about 1 -1.5 meters. It blooms at home, if provided with appropriate conditions of detention, with white flowers, but at a fairly mature age. Inflorescence of the cob. Growth rate is medium to slow: about 1-3 leaves per year, flowering is also 1-2 times per year. It is not difficult to grow zamioculcas at home, it is very unpretentious.

By the way, what is often called stems in zamiokulkas, in fact, are not stems at all, these are leaf axes. Those. its leaf is pinnate - a thick petiole departs from the ground, smoothly turning into the axis of the leaf - this is the so-called rachis, and from it there are many separate leaves, there are on average 12-24 of them per adult leaf. The whole leaf is similar in structure to a bird's feather

It is interesting that zamiokulkas appeared in flower shops about 15-17 years ago, it was very expensive in comparison with ivy and palm trees. The fact is that zamioculcas grows at a moderate pace, a decent bush about 80 cm tall from several fleshy leaves, it grows in about 4-5 years. Most often, chic large plants were sold to the offices of prestigious firms or as an expensive birthday present. There was an opinion that Zamioculcas is a plant for the rich, hence the popular name "Dollar tree" was born on associations. Gradually, the belief that zamiokulkas is able to bring money luck came into existence. In fact, this is of course a myth. Moreover, there is no such name anywhere in America or Europe.

Zamioculcas - home care

Zamioculcas has been grown at home not so long ago, so not everyone remembered its name yet. It should be noted that the plant is unpretentious to care for. Of course, if all the requirements are met, zamiokulkas begins to manifest itself in all its glory, but there are specimens in offices that stand on the floor 3 meters from the window without special care and feeding and feel pretty good. The only difference is that they grow much more slowly and they do not have such large leaves as their counterparts with the right care.

Moderate in summer, optimally between 18-24 ° C, it tolerates heat above 28 ° C worse indoors, without ventilation. In winter, a cool content is preferred, around 16-18 ° C, but not below 12 ° C. In any case, open windows more often in the summer, or move the plant to the balcony.

For zamiokulkas choose a bright place with bright diffused light, where the sun shines only in the morning or in the evening, after 4 pm. The east and northwest window is ideal, you can also grow in the north. In summer he prefers outdoor seating - on the balcony, in the garden, under shade. In winter, you will have to rearrange the zamiokulkas closer to the window; from September to the end of January, the zamiokulkas can grow quietly on the southern windowsill without shading (in central Russia).

Moderate from spring to autumn, with no water remaining on the pallet. Roughly water, after the top layer of the earth dries out in 2-3 days. In winter, watering is rare, the soil should dry out well before the next watering, that is, after the upper part of the soil has dried, water it after about 5-7 days. Zamioculcas tolerates drying out more easily than stagnant water in the soil - this can lead to decay of the roots and the formation of rot on the leaves.

Do not forget that zamioculcas is a succulent, which means that it needs a porous soil with such a frequency of watering that all the soil in the pot dries out no longer than three to four days

Top dressing

From April to August, fertilizing is carried out every 2-3 weeks, since the zamioculcas quickly consumes nutrients. You can use fertilizers for cacti and succulents. Do not use fertilizers with a high dose of nitrogen or highly concentrated organic matter. From excess nitrogen, fleshy roots and leaves become even more watery, cracked, bacterial rot and fungal infections occur. If you use a common fertilizer for indoor flowers, for example, Fertik, then take the concentration 2-3 times less than the recommended one.

Air humidity

Zamioculcas does not require spraying the leaves, but periodically it is necessary to arrange washing with a warm shower so that the plant does not become dusty and does not lose its attractiveness. At the same time, cover the soil from moisture.

Zamiokulkas transplant

Annually in the spring. The soil should be fairly nutritious. For young plants - 1 part of sod land, 1 part of leaf (or peat) land, 1 part of sand (fine gravel, fraction 2-3 mm). You can add a little well-rotted humus earth. Plants over 3-4 years old are transplanted every two years in the spring. The pot for zamiokulkas should be commensurate with the root system, not too spacious. Good drainage is a must.

With old, overgrown plants, difficulties arise when transplanting - the bushes are heavy, it is difficult to put the plant on its side and not break the leaves. Therefore, water the potted soil abundantly before transplanting. Then insert a long knife between the side of the pot and the earthy ball and walk around the pot. Now you need to gently grab the bottom of the entire mass of the base of the leaves and pull. Those. pull out of the pot not by one petiole, but as much as you can grab. When transplanting, inspect the roots; at the same time, you can separate several leaves with tubers and roots for reproduction.

Reproduction of zamiokulkas

Zamioculcas is propagated by dividing the bush during transplantation, by leaf, cuttings. Before planting, it is better to dry the leaf a little, then put it on slightly damp sand or in sphagnum moss.

It is desirable to root cuttings or a leaf with soil heating and using phytohormones for better root formation. Rooting can take up to 2 months.

Rooting of cuttings is easiest in wet vermiculite. After the roots appear, the zamioculcas begins to grow the tuber until it grows about the size of a walnut, the growth of a new shoot does not occur. Thus, after planting a rooted cuttings, it takes a long time to wait for new growth - several months.

But even after planting in the substrate, this representative of the aroid grows very slowly. But adult plants, upon reaching 2-3 years old, begin to grow very vigorously, if they are well looked after and the microclimate is optimal, the zamioculcas grows at such a speed that it is necessary to transplant it into a bucket. In height it reaches a meter, the leaves themselves can be longer - about 1.2 m, but they droop without a garter and the span of the bush reaches 1.5 meters.
