Japanese Fatsia
Japanese Fatsia

Araliev family. Homeland Japan and Fr. Taiwan. Ornamental, fast-growing plant. It is valued for its beautiful crown with finger-like shiny leaves; the flowers are whitish, inconspicuous. The most common is Fatsia japonica Fatsia japonica. Fatsia grows very quickly and with good care for a couple of years it grows up to 1-1.5 m with leaves reaching 35 cm in diameter. The leaves are lobed in shape, have 5-9 lobes, heart-shaped, glossy in outline. On the basis of Japanese Fatsia, there is a hybrid of Fatshedera - this houseplant is distinguished by tougher, leathery leaves.

Fatsia care

The main methods of care: loosening the soil after abundant watering, periodically rubbing the leaves, protection from direct sunlight in early spring with the appearance of an active sun.

Temperature: Fatsia grows best in cool rooms. In warm rooms, where more than 19-20 ° C and low illumination, fatsia sheds the lower leaves and loses its decorative appeal. The area should be regularly ventilated, but avoid cold drafts. Ideal wintering conditions are around 15-16 ° C on the southeast side.

Lighting: bright diffused light in spring and summer, sun in the morning or evening (after 4 pm). Protection from direct sunlight at noon in summer, and from September to January in central Russia, shading of fatsia is not required. Fatsia tolerates partial shade only in summer, but requires good lighting in winter. As supplementary lighting, you can use fluorescent lamps or LED lamps.

Watering: uniform, without overdrying and excess moisture. Abundant watering in warm weather in spring and summer, but after the top of the soil dries up to about half the height of the pot. In winter, watering is moderate and careful, depending on the room temperature, something like this:

  • if the temperature is about 24 ° C, after the top layer of the earth dries out, wait another 2-3 days, and only then water;
  • if the temperature is about 20-24 ° C, after the soil in the top of the pot has dried, wait about 5-6 days before watering;
  • if about 16-18 ° C - at least 1.5 weeks;
  • when the temperature is about 12-14 ° C watering once a month is very poor,
  • below 12 ° C - about once every 2 months, also very, very little water.

Top dressing: in the period from May to August, Fatsia weekly with full fertilizer for decorative deciduous plants, once every two weeks. They do not feed in autumn and winter.

Air humidity: not lower than 60%, often requires frequent spraying. Since, due to its large size, putting fatsia under the shower is problematic, periodically wipe the leaves with a damp sponge to remove dust.

Transplant: annually in the spring, but it is better to transplant the fatsia when the roots cover the entire earthen lump. Soil - light turf (3 parts) mixed with peat (2 parts), coarse sand (1 part), vermiculite (1/2 part). The soil should have a normal or slightly acidic acidity (pH 6-6.5). It is advisable to add additional loosening components to the soil - if the soil is prone to an acidic environment, add 1 part of coconut (coconut briquettes), if the soil is more neutral, add 1 part of chopped pine bark.

Reproduction: by seeds that can be obtained from plants growing in natural conditions (in Russia - in Batumi, where fatsia grows in open ground) or seeds of the company Gavrish (Fatsia Empire) are on sale. Propagated also by layering and cuttings with soil heating.

Fatsia from seed

Important: Fatsia seeds quickly lose their germination, pay attention to the date of packing on the package.

Seeds can be sown at any time of the year if you are ready to light up the seedlings. If not ready, sow in February-March. First, soak the seeds for 24-48 hours at room temperature (or 12 hours on a battery at 40 ° C), you can add epin or zircon.

In a bowl, you need to pour the Terra Vita universal soil (living earth) in half with sand (pre-sterilize). Sprinkle fatsia seeds, but not more than 5 mm. Moisten from a spray bottle, cover with foil.

Seeds germinate within 3-4 weeks at 22-24 ° C. At a lower temperature, germination is possible, but not everyone succeeds - it is very difficult to control soil moisture and not rot the seeds. Therefore, germinate at normal temperature, and as soon as the shoots appear in order for them to grow stronger and harden, move them to a cooler place at 15-18 ° C. The film must be removed.

It is possible to plant in pots with a diameter of 8 cm when two pairs of real leaves grow on the seedlings. The soil is as described above for mature plants.
